Newborn Photography safety

When working with your baby, safety is always my priority. As new parents you want to capture those precious first few weeks of your child and as a photographer I am honored to be part of the experience.

During your photo session, it’s important to give you peace of mind, so I follow Newborn Photography safety best practices for a smooth session to get the best shots of your baby.

Safety Best Practices

  • I always clean my studio before a session.

  • I regularly wash all fabric and wraps that will come into contact with the baby.

  • I wash my hands thoroughly before touching your baby.

  • The studio is warmed up to keep your baby comfy for the naked shots.

Getting the Shots Safely

  • Basket Shots: When shooting overhead of the baby, I always wear a neck strap for the camera so that it is secure.

  • Use a Spotter: Certain poses require a spotter. If my assistant is not available, I will ask the parents to help.

  • Shoot After a Feeding: While it may be hard to predict how your newborn will behave, often a baby will be calmer and a little sleepy after a full feeding. As parents you will need to bring a bottle to feed the baby as needed, this will help the baby be more relaxed.

Photographing a Newborn Baby safely

As a professional photographer, I find that a newborn is one of the most challenging subjects to shoot. Babies can be unpredictable and they aren’t able to take directions, but there are a few steps I can take to make the shoot go as smoothly as possible.

  • If the baby is fussy, there is always a reason, perhaps a break is needed for the baby and also a feed.

  • I will not rush a photo session, they can take 2-3  hours. This gives the baby time to relax so I can get all those wonderful poses.

  • I never leave the baby unattended in a prop or on the posing table, I have a bassinet available to keep the baby sleeping securely while I set up each different shot.

Finally

Above all, I use common sense, and my years of experience has taught me to be patient. This is the key to a relaxed baby, which will make for a successful photoshoot.
