Outdoor Maternity Photography

I have been photographing outdoor maternity sessions as part of my maternity packages for many years. I’ve learned a few skills along the way to make the experience of taking photos outdoors a much more seamless experience for you and all my clients.

Poses For Outdoor Maternity Photoshoots

Parks are usually the best choice, having a natural background gives a better result in your images.

There are a few classic poses often seen in maternity shoots that you can choose. Feel free to look through my maternity portfolio to get some ideas of what you would like to do.

You will also be able to have shots with your partner and any children you might have, showcasing your growing family in a series of posed and candid shots together.

Some of the best family photos can be done outside in the park on a warm evening. A few parks have restrooms so it is possible to take a couple of maternity dresses and do a wardrobe change for more variations in your images.

Summer Maternity Photoshoots

Summertime is easily one of the most picturesque seasons, but the heat will be no fun when you’re all dressed up, wearing a face of makeup. You won’t want to go out for a shoot when the sun is at its brightest; it can be way too hot. Instead, I will try to schedule a summer outdoor photoshoot in the early evening. The lighting will be naturally stunning, and the air should start cooling down.

Regardless of the season, if the weather ends up taking a turn on the day of your scheduled outdoor shoot, do not worry, I will be more than willing to reschedule in order to get the outdoor session done.

Maternity Photoshoots In Urban Settings

For a maternity photoshoot that is a bit more creative, an urban setting could be ideal. Urban settings can be simple against modern buildings, or can be romantic against more classic architecture.

Winter Outdoor Maternity Photoshoots?

I know you are thinking about this, winter in Calgary can be brutal, can you still do outdoor maternity photography in the middle of winter?

Maybe, but it depends on the temperature. If it is not too cold then we can usually get away with a few shots outside. The problem with the cold is it shows in the photo, it’s very difficult for you to relax and get natural looking poses. Also it can be icy, which can risk a fall, something everyone needs to avoid to ensure an enjoyable session.
